Standing Out in a Crowded Market

In 2019–2020, Duolingo faced a significant challenge: how do you make language learning culturally relevant when competitors like Babbel, Rosetta Stone, and Memrise have bigger budgets and similar products?

Despite being a leading language-learning app, Duolingo struggled to differentiate on social media with generic educational content, no distinct brand personality, and a product-first approach that made them forgettable in-feed.

The Key Insight: Users wanted to be entertained, not sold to. Early TikTok content flopped because it focused on features instead of fun. The turning point came in September 2021 when TikTok hit 1 billion active users.

Embrace the Chaos

Duolingo made a radical strategic bet: transform Duo the Owl from passive mascot into an unhinged creator with his own personality, participating in trends like a person, not a brand.

The formula that changed everything: Duo + Trending Sounds + Chaos = Viral Success. Instead of repurposing educational content, they created platform-specific entertainment that made "Duo" a cultural icon, not just a mascot.

my take ✦

What Duolingo really figured out is that brand consistency doesn't mean being boring — it means having a point of view that shows up everywhere. Duo isn't just funny, he's consistently funny in a specific way that only Duolingo could pull off. That's the moat.

The DUOLOGS: Extending the Strategy

Building on Duolingo's proven approach, I developed "The DUOLOGS"—a campaign concept that celebrates global cultures through character-driven content while driving language course engagement.

The concept leverages Duolingo's existing character roster to create cultural celebration content that entertains first while subtly driving users toward relevant language courses. Think "Living With Lily" meets global cultural moments.

The Strategic Bet: If entertainment drives engagement, then cultural celebration becomes the bridge between viral content and actual language learning.

the idea ✦

DUOLOGS is the natural extension of what makes Duo work: he already has relationships with his character roster. What if those friendships became the show? Cultural moments give you an excuse to put him in new contexts without it feeling forced — it's just Duo being Duo, but now he's learning about Lunar New Year or Carnival because his friends dragged him there.
